Editor's Review

Okay, buckle up buttercup, let's talk about Temple Run, the OG endless runner that probably chewed up more of our phone batteries than we'd like to admit. The core gameplay is deceptively simple: you're an adventurer who's pilfered a golden idol from a temple and now you’re being chased by demonic monkeys – because, why not? You control your character with swipes: swipe left to turn left, swipe right to turn right, swipe up to jump, and swipe down to slide. Sounds easy, right? WRONG. The temple is a relentless gauntlet of obstacles designed to trip you up at every turn. We're talking tree roots to jump over, gaps to leap across, walls to slide under, and narrow winding paths that demand ninja-level reflexes. Collect coins along the way (shiny!) to unlock new characters with slightly-different (mostly cosmetic) abilities and power-ups that can give you a temporary boost, like a magnet to suck up coins or invincibility to bulldoze through obstacles. The speed gradually increases, ramping up the pressure until you inevitably face-plant into a tree or plummet off a cliff. It's brutally unforgiving, but that's half the fun. The further you get, the higher your score, and the more bragging rights you earn (probably online, because let's be honest, nobody IRL cares about your Temple Run high score... unless they're also addicted).

Alright, let's give credit where credit is due. Temple Run, despite its age, still holds up surprisingly well. The gameplay is incredibly addictive. That "just one more run" mentality kicks in hard, especially when you’re so close to beating your personal best. The controls, while simple, are responsive and intuitive. You feel like you're actually in control, even when you’re hurtling through the temple at breakneck speed. And let's not forget the sheer variety – the environments change as you progress, offering a visual break from the monotony (even if the core gameplay remains the same). The progression system is well-paced, giving you a steady stream of rewards to keep you engaged. Plus, unlocking new characters, even if they don’t dramatically alter the gameplay, provides a sense of accomplishment. The graphics, while dated by today's standards, are still visually appealing, with vibrant colors and a decent level of detail. And the sound design, from the frantic music to the demonic monkeys' terrifying screeches, adds to the overall sense of urgency and excitement. Sure, it's got that F2P model with IAPs (in-app purchases), but you can totally enjoy the game without spending a single dime. It's a classic for a reason!
